Utrechtse Scheikundige Studentenvereniging "PROTON"

Research groups

On this page you can find information on the different sections available from the Department of Chemistry. This information may help you by making your choice where you want to follow your bachelor and/or master thesis. For more information, you can also check the Section book (password is “Proton”), which is also available in the Protonroom (only for inspection). In this booklet you can find general information about the sections, contact details and experiences from students. At the bottom of this page you can also find a few presentations from research institutes, which show the current topics and what it's like to do your bachelor/masters thesis here.

Bijvoet Centre for Biomolecular Research

  • In the research group Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics mass spectrometry is used to conduct research into cells, processes in cells, proteins and other biomolecules.
  • At Cellular Protein Chemistry research is being conducted into the mechanisms behind protein folding and why and folding these proteins is so important. Research is also being done into diseases caused by the misfolding of proteins.
  • The research group Structural Biochemistry conducts research in structural biology and chemistry. In this field, crystallography and Cryo EM are used for the elucidation of proteins and other biochemical molecules.
  • In the Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery group, research into and synthesis of chemical compounds with medical applications is carried out and new drugs for diseases are searched for.
  • Rhe research group Membrane Biochemistry & Biophysics conducts research into the functioning of membranes and how they are constructed. Research is also being conducted into diseases related to errors in membranes.
  • In the research group NMR Spectroscopy NMR spectroscopy in combination with molecular biology and computational structural biological methods is used to investigate all kinds of biological processes.

Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science

  • The Condensed Matter and Interfaces group focuses on semiconducting nanostructures, self-assembly of these nanostructures and researches the size-dependent properties of nanocrystals.
  • The research group Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis is aimed at synthesis and research of catalysts and similar materials used in gas storage and processes related to photochemical conversion. (Also part of ISCC since Sept 2022)
  • Material Chemistry and Catalysis is focussed on the properties of materials.
  • At Nanophotonics research is being conducted into the manipulation of electrons, atoms and light in nanostructures. These complex interactions can find applications in sustainability and life sciences.
  • At Physical and Colloid Chemistry research is being done on colloidal particles and the interaction between these particles. In this group, various experimental techniques are used to discover the physical chemistry behind processes.
  • In the research group Soft Condensed Matter and Biophysics research is being carried out on colloids and self-assembly and on microscopic techniques using fluorescence spectroscopy.

Institute for Sustainable and Circular Chemistry (ISCC)

  • De research group Organic Chemistry and Catalysis is engaged in the synthesis and research of organic compounds used to improve catalytic processes.
  • The research group Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis is aimed at synthesis and research of catalysts and similar materials used in gas storage and processes related to photochemical conversion. (Also part of the Debye Institute)

Freudenthal Institute for Science and Mathematics Education

  • The research group Chemistry Education is part of the Freudenthal Institute, which conducts research into improving education in mathematics and the natural sciences.
