Asphalt is a cornerstone in modern infrastructure, with its binder playing a crucial role in determining the mechanical performance of roads. The commonly used binder in asphalt is bitumen: a complex mixture of hydrocarbons that provides cohesion and largely determines the mechanical performance of pavements. Over time, however, asphalt roads gradually deteriorate due to aging of the binder, eventually requiring reconstruction.1 Interestingly, asphalt is one of the most recycled materials in the world, and most of the material from old roads can be reused in new pavements.2,3 An important practical question before constructing new roads is therefore how long a road will last before recycling becomes necessary. Surprisingly, no proper laboratory method currently exists to predict this recycling time stage.

Globally, over 100 million tons of bitumen are consumed annually, where over 80% is applied as binder in asphalt constructions.1 Conventionally, bitumen is obtained as a residual product from crude oil refineries. The current urge towards sustainability calls for alternative binder sources, including bio-based and recycled materials.2 Although these circular binders are gaining interest in construction roads, their compositional differences compared to conventional bitumen introduces challenges in maintaining bitumen quality in road durability

At Nostics we develop a product to identify bacteria in urine for applications in healthcare. The envisioned product consists of a small spectrometer located at a doctors office that accepts a sample from a patient that has a urinary tract infection (UTI). The aim is to provide a result withing 10 minutes at a doctor’s office giving the bacterial species present in the urine.
